Yeast Systems Biology: Our Best Shot at Modeling a Cell
نویسنده
چکیده
THE Genetics Society of America's Edward Novitski Prize recognizes an extraordinary level of creativity and intellectual ingenuity in the solution of significant problems in genetics research. The 2014 recipient, Charles Boone, has risen to the top of the emergent discipline of postgenome systems biology by focusing on the global mapping of genetic interaction networks. Boone invented the synthetic genetic array (SGA) technology, which provides an automated method to cross thousands of strains carrying precise mutations and map large-scale yeast genetic interactions. These network maps offer researchers a functional wiring diagram of the cell, which clusters genes into specific pathways and reveals functional connections.

Spatial and stochastic cellular modeling with the Smoldyn simulator.
This chapter describes how to use Smoldyn, which is a computer program for modeling cellular systems with spatial and stochastic detail. Smoldyn represents each molecule of interest as an individual point-like particle. These simulated molecules diffuse, interact with surfaces (e.g., biological membranes), and undergo chemical reactions much as they would in real biochemical systems. Smoldyn ha...

Combined interaction of all the genes forms a central part of the functional system of a cell. Thus, especially the data-based modeling of the gene expression network is currently one of the main challenges in the field of systems biology. However, the problem is an extremely high-dimensional and complex one, so that normal identification methods are usually not applicable specially if aiming a...
متن کاملPushing Structural Information into the Yeast Interactome by High-Throughput Protein Docking Experiments
The last several years have seen the consolidation of high-throughput proteomics initiatives to identify and characterize protein interactions and macromolecular complexes in model organisms. In particular, more that 10,000 high-confidence protein-protein interactions have been described between the roughly 6,000 proteins encoded in the budding yeast genome (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). However, ...
متن کاملA Simple Model of the Modular Structure of Transcriptional Regulation in Yeast
Resolving the general organizational principles that govern the interactions during transcriptional gene regulation has great relevance for understanding disease progression, biofabrication, and biological systems in general. The available genome-level monitoring technologies and the best understood biological work on gene regulation are together providing us with unprecedented amounts of data ...
متن کاملSimultaneous Optimization of the Production of Organic Selenium and Cell Biomass in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae by Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken Design
Selenium (Se) as a vital trace element has many biological activities such as anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation. Selenomethionine as an organic selenium plays a vital role in the response to oxidative stress. At present, Saccharomyces cerevisiae is one of the best microorganisms that has the ability to accumulate selenium. Production of Seleno-yeast was done by growing Saccharomyces cerevisi...
